A young and experimental Wales side are outplayed by Canada as they lose their friendly encounter in Swansea.
I don't think Wales were bad, they just weren't up full tilt, which is understandable, plus you've got young lads coming in, young Ronan Kpakio coming in, young Charlie Crew was in, Adam Davies in goal and Ben Cabango. That's it from Swansea, where Wales have been beaten for only the second time since Craig Bellamy took charge in the summer of 2024.This was Bellamy's first friendly as Wales boss and he took the opportunity to give some back-up players and youngsters a chance to impress. The result was a difficult evening for Wales, who were deservedly beaten by Derek Cornelius' fine free-kick.

Derek Cornelius's first goal in a Canada shirt was a magical one. The Rangers centre-back's sensational free kick in the 41st minute was the game's only goal as Canada defeated Wales 1-0 in Swansea
Tuesday's match was the fourth ever meeting between the two sides and the first in over 20 years. After Canada won their first match, 2-0 in Toronto in 1986, Wales won the next two, a 3-0 win in Vancouver 10 days later and a 1-0 victory in Wrexham in 2004, a match in which current Wales boss Craig Bellamy started.Canada wanted a penalty in the match's opening minutes as Richie Layrea was taken down by debutant Ronan Kpakio. While replays showed that there was contact, referee Robert Jones waved play on. With no VAR in place, there was no review. Seconds later, Wales should have been ahead. The second opened with Wales asserting itself more than it had in the closing stages of the first half. In the 52nd, Oxford United's Mark Harris almost bagged a spectacular first international goal. As the ball pinballed around the box from a Dragons corner, Harris's overhead kick appeared primed for the top corner, but de Fougerolles headed off of the line and into the hands of St.After Canada broke forward in the 57th through Buchanan, Saliba hammered a shot from just outside the area that cleared the cross bar. Minutes later, Wales should have been level through a corner, but 19-year-old Charlie Crew's header at the far post was tame and right into the arms of St.

Craig Bellamy reflects on his "toughest" week as Wales boss - and hopes for a World Cup rematch with Canada after their tetchy friendly match.
This was Bellamy's first friendly in charge of Wales, and he picked Canada - three places higher than his side in the world rankings - because he wanted to expose his fringe players to a standard they may not have previously encountered.Bellamy and his staff were irked that their Canadian counterparts were celebrating before the final whistle and, although the mutual respect from both camps was clear, the Wales head coach hopes to renew that rivalry at next summer's World Cup.Craig Bellamy might have had both iterations in mind when he used the phrase as part of his explanation for choosing Canada as friendly opponents for his Wales side on Tuesday.Given Wales' limited resources, it is essential their player pool is expanded.
